Bluebirds

After last week's snowstorm (this go-around we just got bucketloads of rain), the bluebirds flocked to the Japanese beautyberries near the house. In between feeding they used the trellis and the tulip tree and sweetgum beside the driveway as lookouts.

In this picture they look like a bunch of birds caught in a mist net. The tips of the branches are too flimsy for their weight so they often had to bend way over or flap to keep their balance.

You can see four bluebirds perched here in this sweetgum.

The sky and the bird really were this blue.

  1. Oh my gosh, those are such sweet little dear blue birds. I would love to have those here, but alas. You took some wonderful pictures of them.

I've been enjoying the mockingbirds singing. They sound happy.

  5. Dear Sweet Bay, Gosh! What a lot of pictures. I am now able to see why you felt my posting was lacking in visual detail.

The bluebirds are WONDERFUL. We certainly do not have them in London, where birds are becoming increasingly scarce, and I have so enjoyed looking at them.

Thank you so much for leaving a comment on my posting to which I have replied.

  8. Oh, they're adorable. They look like ornaments in those shrubs and trees. You're so lucky to have bluebirds--they aren't around here at all, and I'd so love to see them in our gardens. Maybe one day they'll move to Nova Scotia, too. (they are occasional here in the province but I've never seen them.)

  11. Sweetbay, wonderful photos of the bluebirds. I am with envy for I have never seen one in our garden, but perhaps they have simply been illusive. ;)

  23. The sight of these beautiful bluebirds gathered in the drab-colored bushes is stunning.

The two bluebirds sitting on top the trellis really should be part of a Valentine's card.

The lone bluebird sitting on a branch with that "knock your socks off" blue sky in the background leaves me speechless. Hard to believe, I know:)

And may I say, I luv the word Sweetgum!

  27. If you know me, you know I love these little birds;-) It's such a joy to have them in our yards, isn't it? You captured some great shots, sweetbay...especially the last few of the one on the branch with the bright blue sky. How did you capture those? It looks like you were right under him!

  28. Thank you everyone for your comments!

Jan I used my 55-300mm lens to take these pictures.

  29. Sweetbay, thanks....I have a 55-300 lens, as well, but I've never gotten one that looked quite that good (in my opinion)! Were you outside when you took it? And how close? I have to take most of mine from my kitchen window, which isn't as close as I'd like. Even if I go out on the deck, it's still pretty far away to the trees...

  30. oh, and YES, we are still digging out;-)

  31. Oh my, your photos take my breath away! Stunningly beautiful, nothing is so pretty as a blue sky or a blue bird but together, they are nirvana!

  32. Thank you IGW, you are very kind. We only get blue skies like this in cool weather; there's so much haze in this summer, but this time of year the skies are as they look out West.

Jan I was outside, maybe 50' from the bird I'm guessing. Your photos are gorgeous. I love the group shots at the birdbath.

  38. These are such beautiful little birds, and you've captured such stunning images of them, Sweet Bay. We don't have bluebirds here, or at least not in my yard. I always think of "the bluebird of happiness"--with this many, you must be in a state of ecstasy:)

  39. Hi Sweet Bay!
How did I miss all these posts of yours??
Trying to catch up now ~ I am so glad I saw this one ~ I've never seen that many bluebirds in one place! They look like little jewels hanging from your shrubs. It's amazing how bright a color they are, isn't it? We used to have the mountain bluebird nest in our backyard when we lived in Wyoming. The male is that bright blue all over ~ it's incredible.
